Student Recount

From Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 October our group of seven set off on a life-changing experience to the Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum to try to improve and hone our leadership skills. At the beginning of this camp, we were all split into separate groups to make friends with students from other schools. This pushed us out of our comfort zones as we ate with each other and attended an amazing presentation about waste and the impact it can have on the environment, then did some team-building/communication activities, that involved building Lego. The leadership camp was inspiring and one of the most memorable experiences we will have for a long time. The second day we had more inspiring talks about leadership and overcoming adversities. In the first part of the day, all groups participated in something called the survivor challenge and the Whacky Olympics, where we completed a series of activities that would help us communicate effectively and trust the people in our groups. On the last day we went out to do some community service which involved us going to an aged care facility and either learning how to knit or helping to run a fair for people with a disability. This taught us that leadership can come in many forms and that you don’t need to be at the front to lead; rather, a leader is someone who inspires, encourages, has courage, good morals, confidence. We all got very close with our groups and had become friends, as these friendships will be everlasting and very rewarding. The Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum has given us some take-home experiences that we will never forget but these two quotes have stuck with us and inspired us to be better leaders “confidence follows courage not courage follows confidence” and “you need to be able to live in the moment before you are able to see the future”
