Commerce

Year 8 Subject Selection

Do you want to learn practical skills that you will need to use for the rest of your life?

Choose Commerce!

Commerce is a dynamic and contemporary subject that provides the knowledge and skills that form the foundation on which people make decisions on consumer, financial, business, legal and employment issues. The Commerce course at Hills Grammar has been developed to reflect the interests and needs of our students in an ever-changing world. In addition to learning theoretical knowledge about Business, Economics, Politics and the Law, students will also learn practical life skills such as budgeting and money management, acquiring a tax file number, writing a resume and applying for jobs, how to earn money from investments, the criminal investigation process, establishing a small business and moving out of home.

Whilst not a prerequisite, the Stage 5 Commerce course provides a firm foundation for studying Business Studies, Economics and Legal Studies in Years 11 and 12.

Feel free to visit the HSIE department and speak to us about whether Commerce is the subject for you!

New Commerce Syllabus 2020

It is an exciting time for the HSIE Department; Commerce 2020 sees the introduction of the New Syllabus where the students will build on knowledge, understanding and skills such as decision-making and problem solving in relation to consumer, financial, legal, political, business and employment issues. Through the study of Commerce, there is also a focus on community values based on ethical and socially responsible behaviour in terms of the key Syllabus topics. General capabilities, which encompass skills, attitudes and behaviours for students to live and work successfully in the 21st Century, are explored through intercultural understanding, numeracy and literacy.
