Student Wellbeing

Student Wellbeing at Hills Grammar is embedded into our daily experiences, and as part of the Wellbeing Curriculum students across all Year groups work with a number of external presenters across the course of the year. We engage a range of external presenters work with students to support the messages and content addressed in the wellbeing curriculum. Students then work with their Mentors and Head of House during our ‘Connect’ and wellbeing year group time to build upon the content that is delivered

Below is a snapshot of some of the events that have occurred already this term.

Year 7 participated in a session from HeadSpace focusing on Transition – Primary to Secondary School. Headspace presentations are health promotion-focused and aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. The session addressed:

  • Understand how transition and change impact mental health
  • Manage stress from change
  • Build resilience and healthy coping skills
  • Strengthen connection and belonging

Year 11 participated in the ‘Brilliant Young Minds’ workshop presented by Motivational Speaker Glen Gerreyn.

The Brilliant Young Minds workshop is designed to help students:

  • Describe and analyse their most effective way of studying.
  • Develop and maintain a functional work environment and realistic study schedule.
  • Take personal responsibility for workload and balance this with family and co-curricular commitments.
  • Adopt a daily routine to consistently prepare for assessment tasks.
  • Adjust personal attitudes and beliefs that lead to improved results.
  • Understand the benefits of thorough preparation through consistent effort
  • Seek assistance with areas of difficulty from school teachers, parents or other mentors.
  • Foster grit and perseverance.
  • Enjoy satisfaction in their educational experience through a more mature approach to study.

Year 11 also heard from Headspace and completed a session on Self Care. This session focused on how students could look after their mental health, as well as how to access help and support. As part of this session students heard about what self care is, the different types of self care,  and why it is important for our overall health and wellbeing. As part of this workshop students had the opportunity to build a personal self care plan.

Year 9 students will have undertaken phase 1 of the ‘Walk the Talk’ program. ‘Walk the Talk’ is a program building awareness of domestic violence and women’s homelessness, Walk the Talk empowers young people to support local women and children in need by ‘adopting’ their local shelter. Involvement in the program sees teens working in a meaningful way to learn about respectful relationships and moves beyond theory and token gestures, into purposeful, informed action. In 2021, Year 9 Hills Grammar students will be working to support The Sanctuary at Castle Hill.

As part of Phase one, students were involved in a half-day workshop delivered by Enlighten Education and the Goodfellas team which explored a range of topics including the importance of friendship, deconstructing gender myths and damaging gender stereotypes, types of relationships and respectful relationships.

During phase two, students will complete a community-based service-learning project which will see students getting involved to support the work of The Sanctuary at Castle Hill.
