Sports Presentation

This week the Sports Department delivered our Virtual Annual Sports Presentation to all Year 3-12 students and to the parents of Award Winners. In what has been a very unusual year in sport it was very pleasing to see that we were still able to capture the major sporting events and allow our students to be recognised for their efforts in these sports.

Please see a link to the presentation that runs for 13 minutes and highlights our major award winners along with a variety of great images of our students in action across the different sporting areas in 2020.

A special mention to our Sportspersons of the Year and Team of the Year who were successful in taking out the major awards:

Junior Sportsperson of the Year

Sophie Franks Bugeja and Harrison Reeves

Intermediate Sportsperson of the Year

Imogen Sidaros and Jai Sidaros

Senior Sportsperson of the Year

Ashleigh Moore and Kynan Leong

Team of the Year

Year 9 Boys Volleyball team based on their December 2019 Gold medal at the National Championships.

All award winners are highlighted in the video.

Hills Zone Sport

This week brought to a close the running of the HZSA Competitions and we are pleased to say that all our teams had success in either competing or reaching finals in their respective competitions.

Congratulations to the following teams who represented the school in such a positive light over the last few months in what was a very unusual sporting season.

Senior Boys Futsal team finished 7th

Junior Boys Futsal team finished 3rd

Senior Girls Touch team finished 3rd

Primary Competitions

Senior Boys Div A team finished 4th

Senior Boys Div B team finished 1st

Senior Girls Touch team finished 4th

Junior Girls Football team finished – to be determined

Junior Boys Football team finished – to be determined

Congratulations to our Division B Boys Basketball Team who defeated William Clarke College on Wednesday in a very entertaining Grand Final. Our boys shot out to a 12 point lead early, however WCC pegged them back to within one point with a few minutes to go. However the boys were calm enough under pressure to be able to hold onto the narrow lead and ended up winning by 5. Congratulations to the boys and Mr Alldis who has coached them all season. Also thanks to Josh Hill (Year 9) and Rowan Matysiak (Year 10) who assisted each week with coaching and refereeing.

Volleyball

Last Thursday our Senior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams competed at the Hills Zone Volleyball Gala Day held at William Clarke College. Both teams have been training all year and were very keen for some competition. The day allowed our teams to play against all schools from across the Zone and both teams were very clinical in all of their matches. Both teams making the Grand Final and both winning comfortably.

It is very pleasing to see both teams rewarded for their efforts, for our girls for many of them it was the first time that they had competed against other schools. Whilst our boys it was the perfect warm up for next weeks NSW Championships to be held at Homebush. We wish the boys the best of luck next week and we look forward to our girls being able to compete in the Schools Cup Competitions next year and also hopefully qualify for the National Competitions in years to come.

We are also excited to announce the launch of our own Hills Grammar Volleyball Training Academy which will look to start in Term 1 2021. This academy will allow students from both Hills Grammar and surrounding schools to receive expert tuition from leading coaches and players who are involved at both a State and National level. Please email sport@hillsgrammar.nsw.edu.au for more information or to register your interest.

Touch Football

Congratulations to all our teams who have competed in the various Touch Football Competitions throughout 2020.

We have had teams playing in the local Hills Hornets Competition with teams in the

  • Under 10’s
  • Under 12’s
  • Under 14’s

Our Senior Girls Team have competed in both the Barker Invitational (winning their division)  and Hills Zone Competitions. We launched our first ever Hills Grammar Touch Football Academy with over 30 students from both Hills Grammar and other schools gaining expert tuition from our own Nick Good, Junior School PE Teacher and current Australian Touch Football Team Captain.

With a return to more competitions next year it is hoped that we will be able to provide our students with plenty more touch opportunities over the next few years, and look to grow the number of students involved in the program.

Squash

Congratulations to Thomas Wang (Year 3) & Elizabeth Wang (Year 2) who both competed in the NSW Junior State Age Squash Championship last  weekend.

Thomas came 3rd in under 11 Boys and Elizabeth came 3rd in under 11 Girls. They were both the youngest competing in their events. This is a great achievement and we look forward to both students being able to encourage their friends to join the new Squash Co-curricular in 2021.

Students in both the Junior and Senior School will have the opportunity to register in the Thursday co-curricular activity from Semester One. Students will be bused to Dural Squash Courts and be taken through expert coaching from Aaron Frankcomb who has represented Australia all over the world in squash. It is hoped that we will then start to identify those students with potential to join a specifically designed Hills Grammar Squash Academy in the hope to be entering School Squash Competitions.

Netball

This week saw the conclusion of our K-2 Introduction to Netball summer program that was designed to give younger students an opportunity to experience skills and game play. With over 50 students participating it was fantastic to see so many students involved in lots of physical activity whilst learning the skills of netball.

The final week saw all kids receive their Certificate of Participation and ice block, we were also very lucky to have Sydney Swifts player Tayla Fraser come down and impart her knowledge to the kids. Special thank you to our Senior students who came down to assist in the coaching. Well done Hannah Mullin (Year 10), Jess Bailey (Year 11), Emma Crossling (Year 11), Maddie Hill (Year 10) and Abbey Ellis (Year 10). Well done Ms Zelasko on organising such a successful summer program, we look forward to seeing a number of new Hills Grammar Netball Club teams in our younger age groups in 2021.
