I am writing to inform you about another wonderful opportunity for students and families of students studying at Hills Grammar. Some of you may know that we have previously had annual visits from a Japanese school called Jishukan. This is a private, co-educational school in Kanagawa, Japan. They were very impressed with the programs we offered them in 2015-2019, and Hills Grammar has accepted their request for a sixth visit this year.
One teacher and twenty-two students will arrive on Thursday 27 July 2023 and depart on Tuesday 8 August 2023 with a 12-night homestay. The students are all 14-15 years old.
We are looking for families interested in hosting a Japanese student for this duration. The students will come to school with their host brother/sister. They will participate in conversational English classes, observe normal classes in the Senior School, and participate in some outings and school activities. In addition, they will spend evenings and two full weekends with your family. As a token of appreciation to help cover food costs, a daily allowance will be paid for the visit.
The students are in Australia to experience everyday life. In the evenings, they should spend as much time interacting with your family as possible, playing sports and games with your children, helping cook family meals, etc. You will receive a profile of your guest before their arrival.
If your child is in Junior School, we will match the Japanese student with a Senior School student studying Japanese to host the guest during the day.
Our department has been involved in these programs for many years and has seen the benefits year after year. Host families can share our Australian-international lifestyle, language and environment with students who may have yet to experience this. In turn, hosting families also have the opportunity to learn about Japanese culture through the eyes of a high school student who can exchange ideas, values and language.
Please note your child does not have to be studying Japanese to participate in this experience as this is offered to the whole school community from K-11.
