Hills Grammar and its students benefit from our association with HICES in many and varied ways, including the provision of student activities and programs which extend and enrich learning; from Debating, G&T Camp, Speechcraft - Communicators Forum, Quality Speechmaking & Presentation, Maths Day, Leadership Day, Primary Swimming , Primary Cross Country, Primary Athletics and the HICES Music Festival our students have access to wonderful opportunities delivered across the HICES network of schools. Today I would make special mention of two recently held HICES events which our students have participated – the HICES Music Festival and the HICES Athletics Carnival
Last Wednesday I attended a HICES (Heads of Co-educational Schools) Heads meeting in the city prior to attending the HICES Music Festival at the Sydney Town Hall. During the meeting I was able to report to attending Principals that the camp which precedes the concert had gone very well, catering for over 400 students from 31 schools. An intensive program of deep music appreciation, tuition, mentoring and practice fills their days – working with Heads of Music, music staff and guest musicians to produce a product which then played to an appreciative audience of parents and others at the Town Hall and at the Jazz Academy performance prior.
This event requires twelve months of planning by member schools BUT none of it would happen without Hills Grammar Music Staff. Mr Owen Nelson (Head of Music) in particular has for a long time overseen, co-ordinated and directed this event and it is a tribute to his professionalism and passion for music that this event is so well attended, so highly regarded and such a wonderful opportunity for students across all schools to work in ensemble and perform at the highest level. All of our music staff are front and centre at this event and this year Ms Tamsin Fraser-Crooks (Music Admin Assistant) joined the fray to provide outstanding support by administering the event and managing the logistics. It was lovely to hear both Owen and Tamsin thanked publically at the end of the event last night.
The Jazz Academy also ran this year overseen and co-ordinated by Mr Eric Hutchens who similarly brings a passion for this style of music to the occasion. The feedback from this concert which occurred prior to the Festival Concert was also outstanding and well received. Great to see the Festival concept giving more and more students an opportunity and again Hills Grammar staff leading the way and setting the standard.
The end products were simply superb and all students, including many of our own service the highest praise and congratulations. They, along with our wonderful Music staff flew the Hills Grammar flag so very high on Wednesday last, but also for the past twelve months. The HICES community asked me to pass on their congratulations and thanks for this extraordinary effort.

Congratulations also to our Junior School Athletics Team who competed at last week’s HICES Athletics. There were some pleasing individual results which contributed to Hills Grammar placing in overall third place amongst participating schools. Individual results of special mention included.
