Distance Learning in Year 5

The Year 5 students and teachers have been working hard during these unprecedented times to deliver and complete ‘distance learning’ tasks. Like all Junior School classes, they have been meeting on MS teams each morning and afternoon to converse, share and engage with each other. In addition, they have experienced one live lesson throughout the day which included either reading groups, literacy skills or maths concepts.

The Year 5 students have continued to maintain a positive attitude and have remained motivated during their independent work. They have engaged in Stem projects, UOI inquiry tasks about the Solar System, Wushka reading sessions, maths activities, specialist lessons and wellbeing sessions.

It has been beneficial to take time to be mindful, meditate and appreciate the ‘good things’ in our lives during these challenging times. The students have been encouraged to look for the ‘silver lining.’ This time in isolation has allowed students to spend valuable time with their families; playing games, cooking, learning a new skill while still maintaining their academic workload. Some of the students wrote letters to their teachers, demonstrating gratitude.

Dear Mrs Reeves

Due to COVID-19 we have been unable to attend regular lessons at school, so we have been introduced to Distance Learning. There have been many people helping me during this challenging time.

I am most grateful for my teacher Mrs Reeves (which is you). You have helped me immensely. All the teachers at Hills Grammar have been like our parents. They have been extremely kind and caring.

My friends have also supported me, they offer help and make me feel good.

I also very grateful for my mum and dad. They take great care of me and always make me feel loved.

Hills Grammar is such a great place, it’s like my second home.

Kind regards,

Josen

Dear Mr Price,

I hope you are having a fantastic day.

Thank you for being there when I need your help and thank you for teaching me this year.

Your student,

Riya

Dear Mrs Newth,

I am very grateful to you for many things during our time of distance learning because I know you must have worked really hard organising and setting it all up for us.

Here are some more reasons why I am grateful to you.

The amazing enthusiasm you have when you call us on teams makes me feel inspired and confident.

You always make sure you answer every ones questions when they add a question mark.

You recognise my hard work and give me praise for it which makes me feel proud of myself and supported.

You speak so nicely online and clearly.

You have really lovely manners and show care to all of your students.

You set out the work so it is easy to understand.

You are patient when someone is left behind in work or makes a mistake.

I am very grateful that you are my teacher Mrs Newth, You are a very thorough teacher to us all and so kind.

Love from your student,

Konstantina
