Careers and Tertiary Awareness News

A “vocation” can be defined, in many ways:

  • a strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation;
  • a person's employment or main occupation, especially regarded as worthy and requiring dedication;
  • a trade or profession.

In fostering each student’s potential for greatness, Hills Grammar strives to provide for its students, opportunities to explore their interests in a number of different ways. Some examples are: offering a diverse curriculum; participation in career assessment testing; participation in industry specific events such as UNSW Engineering Day, guest speakers and past alumni sharing their career stories; Work Experience and the Tertiary Awareness Market just to name a few.

All Year 12 students receive a “Careers news” email each week informing them of upcoming events that they may be interested in attending. Now I will be sharing some of this information to the boarder community and I would like to invite parents to meet with me if they have any enquires or identify an opportunity in which they may be able to contribute to the process of assisting the students to identify their potential vocation.

“What will be the demand for certain vocations in the future?” Hays recruiting has just released its quarterly report on Skills in Demand in 2017. I found it a very interesting read and recommend it to others (https://www.hays.com.au/report/HAYS_1795532 ).

In June, there are two large Careers Expos, which also offer HSC study seminars – HSC and Careers Expo at Royal Hall of Industries Moore Park on the 1 – 4 June (http://www.hscandcareers.com.au/ ) and the Western Sydney Careers Expo 2017 on the 22 – 25 June at The Dome, Sydney Olympic Park (http://www.westernsydneycareerexpo.com.au/ ). I have a small number of free passes to each of these events, if you are interest in attending please contact me.  The School will also be holding its annual Tertiary Awareness Market in August where we have representatives from over 40 tertiary institutions at the school to speak to our Years 10 – 12 students.

The University Admission Centre (UAC) has announced a number of important changes to for the 2018 university admission process:

  • The maximum number of preferences will now be five.
  • There will be an offer round after ATAR release and before Christmas.
  • There will be an offer round in mid-January but no ‘Main Round’.
  • Cut-offs will be published for the pre-Christmas round and the mid-January round.

There are also a number of publications developed by the University Admissions Centre (UAC) available to parents to explain the process of university admission in NSW. These resources can be downloaded free from the University Admission website. They are:

Youth Frontiers

Youth Frontiers is an initiative of the NSW Government that targets students in years 8 and 9, with the capacity to benefit from the support of a mentor.  Each year, more than 1,200 young people have the opportunity to participate in the program.

Young people participating in Youth Frontiers are matched with mentors who spend at least 30 hours over six months supporting them to achieve their goals. The program gives mentees an opportunity to build life skills and self-confidence by working collaboratively with their mentors to undertake a project that makes a positive difference in their local community. http://youth.nsw.gov.au/youth-frontiers/

See the organisations who are working in collaboration with schools to deliver Youth Frontiers in your local area:

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is Australia’s leading mentoring program for disadvantaged young people supported by 100 years of international experience and expertise. Our aim is to unlock the potential of young people through the provision of the highest quality mentoring programs. The mentoring programs match vulnerable young people, aged between 7 and 17 years, living in complex social predicaments and in need of additional support, with adult volunteer mentors. Approximately 30% of young people are referred by their parents or grandparents. The remaining referrals come from schools, youth and family support agencies, foster care agencies, Child Protection Services and disability programs.
