The last day of Term 2 saw the very first Hills District Think Tank workshop ‘kick off’ at Hills Grammar; Sports Science-Behind the Scenes of Our Elite Athletes.
The Hills District ‘Think Tank’ network is a collaboration of seven local independent schools (Australian International Academy, Hills Adventist College, Hills Grammar, Pacific Hills Christian School, Rouse Hill Anglican College, Tangara, William Clarke College), working together to broaden opportunities for high ability students to engage in enriched learning across a wide-range of subject areas.
This workshop was led by Hills Grammar Junior School teacher, Alyssa McMurray, an elite sportswoman in Netball, European Handball and Touch Football.
28 talented sports students in Years 5 and 6 from the seven member schools gathered at Hills Grammar where they examined the components which optimise the performance of an elite athlete; diet, strength and conditioning, fitness, technique and skill. The workshop mixed practical sessions and theory with the students using the Hudl app to compare their technique with the elite athlete of their choice.
They logged their results on iPads and created a training regime to follow as they work on improving technique and fitness in their chosen sport.
The new network will bring a myriad of opportunities for students in the Hills District and highlights our commitment to foster our students’ love of learning and provide additional challenge and enrichment in their area of strength and ability. We are enthusiastically working with the other independent schools on this initiative, with planning underway for further workshops including debating and creative writing.
