Can you provide an overview of your career journey so far?

After having a stroke in 2005, I got a job as an autocue operator at ABC but the job didn’t pay enough to sustain a lifestyle. I was looking to live, so I started my own business as a keynote speaker on resilience – I am a sole trader and my business motto is "Be a good bloke" so things have operated pretty casually from the outset – I always thought I needed something extra – better automation, systems, or some sort of intelligence based ruthlessness to get ahead in business – the phrase "nice guys, finish last" has always been pounding in my head, but I didn't know any better, so I just kept pressing on giving my business, the best crack I could.

What inspired you to pursue this career path?

Doing autocue at ABC pays what you would expect doing autocue at the ABC would pay, so I needed to find an extra income stream to sustain my lifestyle. After the severe brain damage from my stroke, I couldn't convince total strangers within the ABC about the value I could bring to a role when I was applying for internal jobs, so I thought it would be easier to start my own business, so I wouldn't have to get approval for ideas from my boss – I could operate like Chief Wiggum from the Simpsons – "if it feels good, do it!"

What are your future aspirations?

To keep helping people all around the world realise that you don't need anything extra than what is already inside you to get ahead in life.

What advice can you give to our Hills Originals?

You've got this. Whatever challenges you face, and whatever excellence, you are striving for – everything you need to achieve is inside you. RIGHT NOW.
