In Term 1, a group of dedicated students from the Senior School participated in the annual New York Tour for the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN). Recognised as the world’s largest and most prestigious Model UN conference, NHSMUN attracts high school students from across the globe to engage in critical discussions on pressing global issues.
Over the course of four days, students stepped into the roles of world leaders and diplomats, debating real-world challenges and crafting innovative solutions in a dynamic and collaborative setting. This year’s conference featured esteemed guest speaker, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who captivated the audience with insights on global challenges and the importance of civic engagement. An especially thrilling moment occurred when she selected a few students, including our own Anjali as well as Ms. Donker, for a once-in-a-lifetime meet-and-greet opportunity.
In addition to the intense debates and discussions, students enjoyed a taste of New York City’s vibrant culture and history. Their itinerary included attending a Broadway production, walks through Central Park, and visits to landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Times Square.
Anjali reflected on her unforgettable experience: “In March, I attended the NHSMUN tour for our school in New York. This tour allows us to learn about the United Nations and its committees as well as debate techniques and the politics of our current world. During the opening ceremony of NHSMUN 2026, Former VP Kamala Harris was our guest speaker and spent the majority of her time on stage answering questions from some of the students attending the conference on global issues and making change. After this, Ms Donker and I got the amazing opportunity to meet and take a photo with her which still feels surreal even now. I am more than grateful to have been a part of such a once in a lifetime experience.”
The NHSMUN conference provided a remarkable blend of education, inspiration, and adventure, leaving lasting impressions on all participants as they returned more informed and empowered to be changemakers in their communities.
