The Hills Grammar School is seeking an exceptional and future-focused educational leader to take on the newly created role of Head of Digital Innovation & AI. 

This strategic role designed to advance and strengthen teaching, learning, and operational excellence through the ethical and creative use of digital technologies. This role is pivotal in shaping a future fit, digitally literate and innovative culture at The Hills Grammar School (Hills) that empowers both staff and students.  

 Reporting to the Director of Learning and Teaching and working closely with the Head of Technology, Deputy Head of Junior School, the Director of Business Services and the Principal, the Head of Digital Innovation & AI will research and enable the development and implementation of cutting-edge solutions that enhance educational outcomes and cultivates a culture of digital innovation. The role will also be part of a taskforce that will be investigating and developing a virtual school that will offer micro credentials to students locally and internationally.  

This role attracts a small teaching load.  

Main Responsibilities 

  • Actively model and promote our Hills values.
  • Lead the development of a whole-school Digital Innovation Strategy.
  • Identify, pilot, and scale AI tools and platforms that enhance learning and teaching, and school operations.
  • Report regularly to the Executive on innovation impact, risks, and future directions of AI.
  • Develop in consultation with the Director of Learning and Teaching, the Head of Technology, and the Deputy Head of Junior School develop a scope and sequence for the development of digital skills and digital literacy, online safety and ethics for students and coordinate its implementation.
  • Research and investigate innovative approaches to curriculum and assessment for consideration by Learning and Teaching teams.
  • Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and innovation K -12.
  • Work closely with the Virtual School taskforce to facilitate its development, implementation and eventual global reach.
  • Seek partnerships with universities, specialists, consultants and industry to further advance digital innovation at Hills, and ensure school practices remain contemporary, research-informed, and innovative.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies, assessing their value and risk in an educational context.

Digital Innovation  

  • Support teachers to embed technology and AI into curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Work closely with the Head of Technology, Director of Learning and Teaching, Head of Curriculum 7-12 and Deputy Head of Junior School to develop AI bots or gems for students to support learning.
  • Promote AI literacy and ethical digital citizenship among staff and students.
  • Work with the ICT and curriculum teams to support integration with systems such as our student management system, SEQTA, Microsoft Teams, OneNote, and SharePoint.
  • Develop resources for students and staff to advance the use of AI effectively, ethically and safely, and ensure that the school’s AI guidelines are followed.
  • Empower students as digital leaders and innovators, supporting cocurricular in consultation with the Director of Cocurricular and instigating student-led initiatives.
  • Develop, promote and facilitate professional learning opportunities for staff in consultation with the Director of Professional Learning.
  • Mentor, support, and challenge staff to achieve continuous improvement in the use of innovative technology including AI to reduce workload, advance learning and increase student engagement.
  • In partnership with the Head of Technology and the Director of Learning and Teaching, lead parent and community engagement on responsible AI use, cyber safety, and digital citizenship.
  • Build community confidence through parent workshops, showcases, and collaborative innovation projects.
  • Ensure that policies, procedures and guidelines related to digital technology are current.
  • Represent the school at applicable networks; present at conferences, and engage in research and learning about national and global innovations and the use of AI in education

Selection criteria 

  • Experience implementing AI technologies and understanding of prompt engineering and generative AI.
  • Appropriate teacher qualifications and experience in the classroom with an area of teaching expertise.
  • Experience in working with staff and students to adopt new technologies.
  • Strong understanding of current and emerging trends in technology and AI.
  • Ability to align innovation initiatives with the School’s Strategic Plan.
  • Outstanding communication, collaboration, and change management skills.
  • Deep understanding of digital ethics, data privacy, and risk management.
  • Excellent digital skills and a willingness to learn and deepen knowledge and understanding of new technologies and AI.
  • Strong sense of self-awareness, integrity and agility, and the ability to lead by example.
