Joel Edgerton

Class of 1991 | Actor, Writer, Director 

Joel graduated Hills Grammar in 1991. He studied Drama at the University of Western Sydney 1992-1994.

In 1996 he was cast in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Nick Enright’s Blackrock. The critics claimed ‘Edgerton announced himself as an important new talent’.

His stage career blossomed as he joined John Bell’s Shakespeare Company where he performed in Henry IV and Henry V. Following these outstanding performances Joel was cast in a string of Sydney Theatre Company and Bell Shakespeare Company plays.

Joel’s TV break came with the Aussie Drama The Secret Life of Us commencing in 2001. Meanwhile he and brother Nash started their film company Blue Tongue Films which saw award winning films entered in Tropfest and many other international festivals. 

In 2008 Joel and Nash hosted a screening of their first feature film The Square for the Hills Grammar community at the Events Cinema Castle Hill.

For over 10 years, feature films have been daily life for Joel with credits from Star Wars to The Great Gatsby; Arthurian legends and Biblical epics; playing detectives and crooks….  filming all over the globe with the A list of Hollywood.

However, it must be The Gift that has given him the greatest joy as writer, director and actor. The movie was both a box office success and an artistically acclaimed thriller.
